This action will also honor the legacy of the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who passionately advocated for HR 40 and its pursuit of justice and equality.

We look forward to seeing you all next Sunday, August 18th, for our annual Nikkei Community Picnic. We'll have food, fun, rides for kids, prizes, and surprises!

Location: Oaks Amusement Park, Area 11-13

We will provide the following at no cost:

Main Dish: Fried chicken and vegetarian entrée
Water
Eating utensils; plates and napkins

Shave Ice
Games and prizes
*Ride bracelets for kids high school and younger if you call/email to reserve them before August 12, otherwise they can be purchased for $30 day of.

**There is a $5 fee for parking: payable on site 88

Tea Tasting and Discussion

Join the Japanese American Museum of Oregon and Electrica Coffee PDX for an exciting tea tasting experience and discussion hosted by owner, Seiji Nanbu. Electrica is an effort to highlight two important aspects of Seiji’s heritage by featuring Mexican coffee alongside Japanese Tea.
Seiji curates the selection of Japanese teas available at Electrica, which currently carries Yugen from Kyoto and Mizuba Tea from Portland. During this Friday afternoon event, Seiji will present a sampling of his curated tea selection and give a short talk about them, as well as his experience as an entrepreneur in Portland’s food scene. Ticket purchase includes tasting plus a regular-sized hot or cold tea.

Oregon Metro, partnered with Epworth United Method

Oregon Metro, partnered with Epworth United Methodist Church and the Japanese Ancestral Society of Portland Oregon (Nikkei Jin Kai), will host a community visioning workshop on August 24 about the Portland Expo Center. This workshop will explore ways to recognize and meaningfully memorialize the history and experience of Japanese Americans at the Expo Center site.

Date: Saturday, August 24th
Time: 10 AM to Noon
Location: Epworth United Methodist Church, 1333 SE 28th Ave, Portland, OR 97214

Those interested in this event should register using the link in our bio before August 18th.

Ideas for memorialization of Japanese American history and culture will be gathered in this in-person workshop. Oregon Metro will also distribute an online questionnaire in August to collect input from community members who are not able to attend the workshop.

The Expo Center holds a unique history for Japanese Americans. Following Executive Order 9066, more than 3,800 Nikkei living in Portland and Southwest Washington were detained at the site for 3-4 months. Most were then moved to Minidoka. Valerie Otani’s art installation, Voices of Remembrance, as seen in the first picture, stands as a reminder of this history.

On behalf of the Expo Future Historical Significance and Memorialization Committee Co-Chair Lynn Fuchigami Parks and committee members Akiko Imamura Betcher, John Kodachi, and Hanako Wakatsuki-Chong, I invite you and your family members to a community visioning workshop on August 24. Your voice and perspective are essential to this project, and I hope you will join us to share your ideas of how to meaningfully tell the story of your community at the Expo Center site.

Thanks to everyone who joined us yesterday to remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Michiko Kornhauser, singing in the middle of the second picture, was born in Nagasaki in 1936. She is a hibakusha - an atomic bomb survivor. Currently, she belongs to Ikebana International Portland Chapter 47, JASO, Tomodachi-kai, and others.

Jeff Selby, who served two terms as the president of Portland JACL, delivered yesterday's opening remarks.
